The Laramie Project

Join us for a heartfelt and impactful script reading benefit performance of The Laramie Project as we reflect on the 25th anniversary of Matthew Shepard's passing and honor his memory.

By Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project

Directed by Todd Nielsen

We are excited to be able to bring this heartfelt and impactful staged reading to our audience. In November of 1998, four weeks after the murder of a young gay student named Matthew Shepard, Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming to collect interviews that might become material for a play. Two years later they had created a clear and honest portrait of a town caught up in this life-changing event. Since being published, The Laramie Project has become one of the Top Ten produced plays in many high schools and theaters across the country. It deals frankly with heart, humor and honesty presenting all points of view surrounding the incident.

In light of events such as these, including the all-too-recent bullying and tragic suicide of a non-binary young student, Nex Benedict, our event takes on even greater significance for us. Since Matthew’s passing, over 25 years later, we still can work to raise awareness surrounding the issues of LGBTQ+ youth, teen suicide, bullying and hate crimes in any form. We can better understand and be aware of the importance of acceptance and inclusion on all levels.

By attending this benefit performance, your donation will contribute to The Matthew Shepard Foundation, The Trevor Project and Southern Oregon Pride so any additional donation over your minimum $25 will be greatly appreciated for these worthy causes. Proceeds will go to these LGBTQ+ organizations dedicated to combating bullying, promoting mental health awareness, providing counseling against teen suicide, and fostering a culture of kindness and understanding nationally and locally in our community.

We hope you will come to listen, share and support with us for this very special evening.
